Colorbox Theatre's debut production offers five of Poe’s works, framed with an imaginary scenario featuring a fictionalized version of the author himself. The play begins with Poe (the excellent Devon Nimerfroh) in an asylum, trying to convince his doctor of his sanity. From there we hear the tale of the Raven who repeats "nevermore" and a few more greatest hits, delivered grippingly via simple narrative recitation. "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Fall of the House of Usher," lesser-known poem "The Bells"—each has links to madness and death, and to the way madness sits on a continuum of human experience, with the line between sanity and the deep end rather thin. The pursuit of such themes makes for chilling literary seasonal fare. —Suzanne Scanlon
