Nightclubbing: Danceteria Video Lounge

Performance video from the archives of Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong, whose live-music show Nightclubbing ran on New York public-access cable from 1977 to 1980. Shot at the Danceteria, a Chelsea nightspot that booked a variety of new wave acts, this provides a colorful snapshot of underground music circa 1980, when the popular T-shirt of the day read “Fuck Art—Let's Dance.” Some of the featured acts went on to bigger and better things (the Go-Go's, Kid Creole and the Coconuts), and some vanished without a trace (Buzz and the Flyers, a rockabilly outfit with a black singer). Most welcome are songs by Pylon, the Raybeats, and the Bush Tetras, bands that defined intelligent, offbeat dance music but had all petered out by Reagan's second term. 63 min.
