I was here one Tuesday late, and I had the bag that I carry everywhere. The person behind the desk said, "Oh, you're going to have to check that," and I said, "It's just my wallet, my camera--my man purse, basically." He thought about that and said, "OK." So I went in and the security guard gave me a very hard look and said, "You're going to have to check that," and I said, "The guy at the front desk said it was fine." It wasn't fine with the security guard, so I checked the bag. Then as I was touring the museum I noticed that just about every woman was carrying a purse or had a backpack; the policy obviously only applied to men. I went back to the guard and said, "I have to check my purse but all the women get to keep theirs--what's the deal?" His response was, "Men don't carry purses." What if I had walked in in drag? Would I still have to check my purse? What if it was just a small clutch? A Kate Spade, for example--something tasteful. Would I still be breaking the rules? Now every time I come here I take everything out of my bag--aka my purse--and check the empty container.
