Night Marchers, Dynamiters, Cage the Elephant

In the nearly 20 years since Rocket From the Crypt exploded out of San Diego, front man and guitarist John “Speedo” Reis has attained a godlike status in the garage and indie worlds by releasing a consistent and nearly constant stream of high-quality rippers with God knows how many different projects. Certain people prefer his collaborations with Rick Froberg—Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes—but Reis also does fine without him. On See You in Magic (Vagrant), his debut with the Night Marchers (he’s joined by two other members of the original Hot Snakes lineup), he’s still finding ways to keep himself—and us—interested in rock ’n’ roll. The band’s less snarly than RFTC and less knotty than Hot Snakes, and though it’s got a touch of the stiff swagger of classic rockabilly and the self-conscious flamboyance of Little Richard it doesn’t actually sound anything like either. The Dynamiters and Cage the Elephant open. —Miles Raymer
