Night Catches Us

Deliberately paced and artfully framed, this pensive drama about an African-American community takes place in Philadelphia in 1976, four years after the police have gunned down a cop-killing Black Panther. His widow (Kerry Washington), a lawyer and activist, has moved beyond her past extremism, and when an old flame suspected of being an informant (Anthony Mackie) resurfaces, both their lives are threatened. The two leads are excellent, but as Washington's unstable, impressionable cousin, stage actor Amari Cheatom telegraphs with his every movement the tragedy to come. Tanya Hamilton directed her own script, and though her ending leaves loose ends dangling, the movie is refreshing for its seriousness and originality.
