Re: “Charlie Trotter's

I have wanted to go to Charlie Trotters for years, but waited for an important occasion. I shouldn’t have waited--this restaurant is past its prime. While the service was excellent (probably the best I’ve ever had) the food was, at best, fine (and for the cost and hype, all courses in this meal should have been at least very good). I had the “grand” tasting menu. The main course - bison - was excellent, but many of the other courses (including the nondescript whitefish) were downright ordinary. My girlfriend had the vegetarian menu. Three courses in was a dish with so many truffles that the rest of her meal tasted like truffles to her. She couldn’t even eat her dessert because of the taste. Additionally the entire vegetarian tasting menu was seasonal, and given that we went in February, it was all mushrooms and beets, etc--fine for a course or two, but not five or six. The highlight for us (we don’t drink) was the nonalcoholic drink pairings. They were very imaginative and did truly complement the food very well. It was well worth the $45 per person for that. While there were some wonderful things about this meal, all in all it was a disappointment, and I would not recommend going there unless you're on an expense account.
