Nick Nolte: No Exit

For this profile of the veteran actor, video maker Tom Thurman records a nicely groomed Nolte posing a series of questions to himself and cuts in footage of a more disheveled Nolte (but not nearly as disheveled as the one in that notorious arrest photo) supplying the answers. This self-interrogation is punctuated by admiring comments from such colleagues as Barbara Hershey, Alan Rudolph, Jacqueline Bisset, Powers Boothe, Ben Stiller, and Rosanna Arquette. Because Nolte is a real artist who's made consistently interesting career choices, this autobiographical approach is rewarding for a while. But once he starts complaining about his tabloid coverage and labeling journalists as drunks and whores, the fraudulent nature of the video (not to mention its title) becomes harder to ignore. This is what every movie star wants: softball questions of his own devising and a chorus of his pals to testify about how "uncompromising" he is. 74 min.
