Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and Donavan Quinn (Skygreen Leopards) recently released their debut as New Bums, Voices in a Rented Room (Drag City), a decidedly low-key singer-songwriter album that achieves the occasional moment of exquisite beauty. Sometimes they expand the instrumentation beyond their strummed acoustic guitars and braided voices: on gorgeous opener “Black Bough,” for instance, overdubbed drums and cello add harmonic depth and warmth. Both musicians have rather anemic voices, and their casual harmonizing—they often sound more than a little like Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth on a Jacobites record from the 80s—does little to conceal that shortcoming. But the loose, sleepy vibe seems entirely intentional, and the hushed atmosphere gives the album a pleasant intimacy—it’s just too bad that what must’ve felt good to these guys in the studio doesn’t always sound finished to those of us who weren’t there. —Peter Margasak Red River School of Taxidermy and Mako Sica open.
