Never Steady, Never Still

111 minutes · 2017

Drama
British actress Shirley Henderson uses her soft voice and tiny frame to great effect as a rural housewife wasting away from Parkinson's disease. After the woman's husband (Nicholas Campbell) dies, her inarticulate, sexually uncertain teenage son (Théodore Pellerin) returns home from his job on a drilling rig to care for her and sort out his own life. Kathleen Hepburn, who wrote and directed this Canadian drama, captures the daily rhythms of a community so isolated that loneliness can trigger suicide. The actors are excellent (especially Mary Galloway as a pregnant supermarket clerk), but this downer may test your resistance to cabin fever.
