When: Sat., July 25, 10 p.m. 2015
Over the last five years Rebecca Valeriano-Flores has established herself as one of the scrappiest, fiercest figures in the local punk scene—she’s an unsentimental force of nature that gets extra juice from a healthy sense of righteous indignation. The lean pop she perfected with Tyler Jon Tyler has been replaced by strident contempt in Negative Scanner, which has finally released its eponymous debut on Trouble in Mind; the album opens with a ripper called “Ivy League Asshole,” which excoriates the continuing dominance of white men in our society. What sets Valeriano-Flores apart from thousands of other postpunks is the power and astringent sinew of her howling, hectoring yowl, one that lands somewhere between Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney and Jehnny Beth of Savages but has a hell of a lot more energy than either. The band’s lean, no-fuss attack is clearly inspired by the fat-free sound of early Wire, complemented by that of a dozen of different early Rough Trade bands. The guitar playing of Matt Revers and Valeriano-Flores produces a brittle, slashing whipsaw of crude chords and wiry lines, while the jackhammer rhythm section of bassist Nick Beaudoin and drummer Tom Cassling struggles to keep up, perhaps from sheer exhaustion. —Peter Margasak
