Natural Child, People's Temple, Totally Wrecked

Nashville trio Natural Child works with a simple but effective formula: steal a bunch of licks from classic-rock records, speed them up till they read as garage rock, add lyrics about getting high, and repeat (and repeat and repeat). The new Hard in Heaven, on the exceedingly hip Burger Records, is their second LP this year, and they've been keeping such relentless recording and touring schedules that they've really tightened up as a band—they're at the point where they make this stuff look effortless. Obvious standout track "B$G P$MP$N" combines a Chuck Berry-style 12-bar progression with goofily generic baller-rap lyrics, but I prefer "Derek's Blues"—the band claims it was inspired by Eric Clapton, but as is the case with most of Natural Child's better material, it sounds like an outtake from Beggars Banquet. —Miles Raymer People's Temple and Totally Wrecked open.
