The National Association of Recording Merchandisers hosts a weekend-long music business convention (registration ranges from $49 to $1,699). It starts with a two-part "Music Business Crash Course" on Friday (8:30 AM-5:30 PM) and Saturday (8:30 AM-12:30 PM) which will focus on the advantages of digital for indie artists and labels. Other forums range from "Alternative Strategies for the Physical Marketplace" to "The Current State of the Metal Marketplace." American Idol judge Randy Jackson wraps up Sunday by presenting a free performance by Paper Tongues (a band he manages) at Buddy Guy’s Legends at 9:45 PM. In a separate event (with a separate $199 fee, $99 for students and artists) on Monday from 1:30 to 5:30 PM, NARM introduces the "Music Law 2010 Conference: Clouds, ISPs, and Royalty Challenges," which addresses copyright law and digital ticketing, among other issues. Finally, a red carpet reception and awards dinner finale ($299 registration fee includes conference) will honor artists like Colbie Caillat and Cyndi Lauper, who’ll perform in some capacity.
