NASCAR 3D: The IMAX Experience

More than three decades after the Imax format was unveiled, it's still stuck in the amusement park ghetto, too costly to permit genuine risk taking and too limited in its exhibition potential to attract major filmmakers. This 3-D overview of NASCAR racing, the most popular spectator sport in the U.S., seems a natural for the six-story screen, which may be part of the problem: I've never seen an Imax film that wasn't a relatively safe commercial bet. Director Simon Wincer supplies a soberly informative view of the stock-car-racing industry, but despite the occasional white-knuckle point-of-view shot, I never felt I was being pulled into someone else's reality—and isn't that the whole point of cinema? PG, 40 min.
