Idiosyncratic rapper- producer Tree, aka Tremaine Johnson, makes tracks with dimensions. He invests so much heart into his loose-limbed “soul trap” instrumentals, and his raspy vocals and observant lyrics evoke so much of his personality, that listening to a song by the local MC can feel like spending a sunny afternoon chopping it up in his backyard. Tree’s not only commanded some of the national spotlight, but he’s also made his unique sound and vision work well with other MCs, including jumpy, gruff rapper—and New Deal Crew leader—Chris Crack. On Christmas Eve the pair dropped a joint five-song mixtape called Tree + Crack. On it each MC shows how much fun he has working with the other, even as both rap about the struggle at the bottom and sleeping with a gun at arm’s reach. The pair worked well before Tree + Crack and have continued to do so after; on Tree’s great new solo mixtape, February’s Trap Genius, Chris Crack injects a cool, nefarious edge into “Hunneds and Fifties.” I suspect the pair will break that song out during this joint set for the latest Fake Shore Drive showcase. —Leor Galil
