Documentary
Refreshingly low-key for a movie about enlightenment, this documentary focuses on the relationship between Tibetan Buddhist master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche and his half-Italian son, who's spent much of his adult life as a company man for IBM. Director Jennifer Fox shot this during extended stays with both men in 1989, 2002, and 2009; and like Michael Apted's Up documentaries, it's most interesting in its depiction of how personalities evolve over time. Unfortunately, there's no rhyme or reason to the editing: the compelling details tend to get buried under stretches of far less interesting material, such as sound bites of Rinpoche's lectures and scenes of each man traveling for work.
