Essay, Program
These personal essay films by young Iranian independents offer an intimate view of authoritarian rule and economic depression in Tehran. The lighter of the two, Mohsen Amiryousefi's My Home (50 min.), follows the director as he searches for someplace to live on his meager savings, presenting his uniformly shoddy options as something of a running gag. In Mehdi Bagheri's Reluctant Bachelor (2011, 58 min.), the director's family and friends despair over the stifling social crises; the intimacy sometimes feels voyeuristic, but Bagheri's noble intention—to disseminate opinions unwelcome in official media outlets—shines through. In Farsi with subtitles.
