Julianne (Julia Roberts) believes love will pass her by if she doesn't prevent her best friend of nine years (Dermot Mulroney) from marrying a woman he recently met (Cameron Diaz). Her plot to break up the couple becomes increasingly nasty—in fact, she's so mean, selfish, and crazy that she almost seems realistic, especially compared to the types Roberts tends to portray. The draggy narrative of this 1997 comedy is tough to sit through—there are even several overproduced musical numbers—but it does have an intriguing subversive element that I don't want to give away. Directed by P.J. Hogan (Muriel's Wedding) and written by Ronald Bass.
