Part of the early-90s west-coast pop-punk explosion, the Muffs were the LA band that leaned a little more toward pop than punk. Fronted by Kim Shattuck, whose vocals were half honey sweet, half raspy slur, this trio cranked out five albums of hook-heavy, high-strung guitar pop between 1993 and 2004—the best of the bunch being 1995’s Blonder and Blonder, which is a perfect document of radio-ready punk rock in the wake of Green Day’s Dookie. In 2013, Shattuck joined the Pixies on bass for its never-ending reunion stint after the other Kim took off for good. She was unceremoniously ousted from the band after only a handful of months, giving her a chance to get back to what she does best: front the Muffs. Whoop Dee Doo (Burger Records), the first Muffs LP in a decade, came out this summer, and it embodies everything that’s made the band great—Shattuck’s voice sounds more road worn and cigarette burned than ever before. —Luca Cimarusti
