Mae is an ignorant pig farmer. Lloyd, her common-law husband, is pretty much a pig. Both are illiterate at the start of Maria Irene Fornes's 1983 play, but Mae is taking classes somewhere and has a notion of better things for herself. Civilized, kindly Henry looks like one of those better things. He becomes Mae's lover and moves in, with results that are predictably devastating to everyone involved. Mud looks simple--even, at times, simpleminded. But its simplicity is archetypal. Done right, it can be a haunting thing. Director Lawrence Keller not only does it wrong, treating it more or less naturalistically, but fails to do it wrong well. At best, you can catch glimpses of Fornes's powerful intent waving at you through the fog. --Tony Adler
