Much Ado About Nothing | various locations | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through July 27 2014
Kids and their reactions can be an interesting way to take the measure of the Bard's comedy—unlike us well-trained adults, they have little to no shame about expressing themselves when bored. And for the most part, the kids were game at the opening night of Midsommer Flight's outdoor staging of Much Ado About Nothing, which with its emphasis on camp and big gestures seems directed partly at the tykes and partly at the older, balder people who drag them to it. It's kind of a weird show for families—the language is better suited for older kids (if that), and the play's slut-shaming themes don't help. But solid physical comedy—from Chris Smith as Don Pedro, Martel Manning as Benedick, and Jared Dennis as Dogberry—saves the day, though the crayons and coloring paper came out in force for Don John. —Chloe Riley
