The M's formed four years ago and get great shows with bands like the French Kicks, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Walkmen, but their scrawny discography--six whole songs--would seem to indicate serious motivational problems. But give the local band's EP (self-released in 2002, rereleased last August on Brilliante with two bonus tracks) a spin and you can see where all the time went. Their baroque, driving aesthetic straps psych-pop sounds--sustain-heavy lead guitar, nasal harmonies, processional bass, trumpet, tambourine--to the bellies of songs that know where they're going: your zipper, child. The swirly guitars-and-horns mix has brought on inevitable comparisons to the Beatles, but the M's stomp like girls with cramps and moan like Robyn Hitchcock reunited with his sweaty groin; occasionally they capture the wistful, secular-gospel sweetness the Insomniacs chased on their first LP and had lost by the second. And soon you can ease into a long, hot bath of this stuff: a full-length is finally in the can, with a release party scheduled for April 2 at the venue they're headlining tonight. Kim and Danger Adventure open. Friday, February 6, 10 PM, Schubas, 3159 N. Southport; 773-525-2508.
