The beloved 1938 children's book about a house painter who becomes guardian to a dozen penguins has been turned into a standard-issue children's comedy with Jim Carrey. By "standard-issue" I mean that there's a neglectful-dad story line (now Popper is a divorced real estate agent in Manhattan who can't connect with his preteen daughter) and numerous poop and fart jokes (the penguins have this covered). As a child I was captivated by the idea of a fellow flooding and freezing his basement to create a winter wonderland for his frolicking seabirds; director Mark Waters (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) re-creates the scene in Carrey's high-rise apartment, but it was a lot better in my imagination. With Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury, and Clark Gregg.
