Mr. 3000

After an endless string of supporting roles, mostly in crummy comedies, self-styled badass Bernie Mac graduates to romantic leading man in this modest but sincere baseball story. He plays an arrogant Milwaukee Brewers star who commemorates his 3,000th base hit by retiring in the middle of a pennant race; nine years later he's still blackballed from the Hall of Fame, and an audit reveals that he's actually three hits shy of his nickname, which prompts him to return to the Brewers. There are no big surprises, but Mac and director Charles Stone III (Drumline) hit all the right dramatic notes, and Angela Bassett is reliably smart and sexy as Mac's love interest, a cable sports reporter assigned to cover his monumental comeuppance. With Chris Noth and Paul Sorvino. PG-13, 104 min.
