Matthew Palm wrote you a letter (February 7) in which he recollects seeing, as a child, the words "Episode IV: A New Hope" scroll in the opening title sequence of the very first release of Star Wars, 20 years ago. Your film critic, Jonathan Rosenbaum, says he, Rosenbaum, saw the film in LA, and didn't see those words because they weren't there. He offers the testimony of a "20th Century-Fox spokesman" in support.

Well, I don't know what happened in LA. Maybe it opened there in less than final form. But here in Chicago, I also attended the first showing of Star Wars. I saw what Matthew Palm saw, and I was no kid. I remember thinking that it was a nice touch, being a reminder of the serials I used to see at the Saturday afternoon movies when I was a kid, back in the 50s.
