Most coming-of-age movies follow their protagonist on the painful path to adulthood; this subversive little drama (2004) by Alison Murray turns the notion of adulthood on its head. A British teen (Ellen Page of Hard Candy) living in Berlin with her mother (Natasha Wightman) runs off with a scruffy collective calling itself SPARK (Street People Armed With Radical Knowledge). But her ardor for the group begins to cool when her flaky parent tracks her down, announces she's joining as well, and falls under the sway of the kids' tyrannical, mind-fucking ringleader (Eric Thal). As mother and daughter reverse roles, the polarities of youth and maturity dissolve, leaving only people who think for themselves and people who can't. 96 min.
