Koen Holtkamp and Brendon Anderegg, aka long-running duo Mountains, spend a great deal of time attending to detail as they build their slow-moving collages from rich layers of electronic and acoustic sounds, but their music never feels fussy or overwrought. The new Centralia (Thrill Jockey) is as transparent and airy as anything they’ve done, with subtle new strokes that add depth to the album. The elegiac cello that wafts in toward the end of “Sand” alters the track’s complexion and feel, and the cycling arpeggio in “Circular C” (a title that apparently refers to Terry Riley’s In C) is formed by a hypnotizing note-to-note trade-off among synthesizer, acoustic guitar, and piano, almost like a hocket. Each flourish proves that Mountains are doing more than just making pretty noises. —Peter Margasak White/Cream with Frank Rosaly and Bitchin Bajas open.
