Dom Maker and Kai Campos, the British producers and multi-instrumentalists behind the group Mount Kimbie, have the rare ability to translate the sounds and rhythms of electronic dance music into a pop idiom without sacrificing the hypnotic quality that makes them feel like dance music in the first place. Their latest album, Cold Spring Fault Less Youth (Warp), finds inspiration in hard-edged classic Chicago house records and the latest wave of postdubstep British bass artists, which Mount Kimbie infuse with a little human warmth, but not too much—you get the feeling that Maker and Campos, unlike most of the electro-pop artists they’re lumped in with, start their compositions by programming a beat instead of by writing a vocal melody. There are plenty of vocal melodies here, though, delivered either by a member of the duo or by this month’s indie It Boy, King Krule, who appears on two tracks; combined with snippets of organic instrumentation that blend in with the electronic sounds, they evoke a moody relationship between man and machine. —Miles Raymer Jonwayne and D33J open.
