Jackalope Theatre Company's second full-length production, reuniting director Gus Menary and playwright Andrew Burden Swanson, delivers on the promise of their fascinating but woefully underproduced 2008 debut. Swanson's Prohibition-era tale is simple but resonant. A mysterious moonshine runner, feared and hated by nearly everyone in his backwoods Tennessee town, gets caught in a dangerous legal snare, and his best escape may ruin the life of the good-hearted blind cousin who has steadfastly supported him for years. Swanson finds myriad compelling psychological nuances in his dead-end characters, and Menary coaxes rich, understated performances from his lead actors. John Holt's rough-hewn clapboard set is as stark and uncompromising as Swanson's brutal, thrilling tale of greed and betrayal. Only 21, Swanson seems fated for greatness. --Justin Hayford
