Adventure, Animated, Comedy, Fantasy
Monsters, Inc., a factory located in the realm behind the bedroom-closet doors of every child, pays its employees to make children scream—screams are the equivalent of electricity in the monster universe. But the analogy to our dependence on, say, oil is soon abandoned, the better to blur the distinction between abstract and concrete—something older viewers of this 2001 animated adventure may appreciate more than younger ones. An unprecedented friendship between a monster and a child leads to an amazing chase scene set on a kind of celestial assembly line, with thousands of detached bedroom doors through which the heroes—a hairy, scary monster and its smooth assistant, a diminutive cyclops—pursue a reptilian villain. Directed by Pete Docter; written by Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson; with the voices of John Goodman, Billy Crystal, and Steve Buscemi.
