An audacious but decidedly marginal gangster comedy (1964) by Japanese director Kon Ichikawa. Chunky, bug-eyed Shintaro Katsu plays a good-hearted cabdriver hired by one heroin-dealing gang to sabotage another, and the far-fetched, convoluted plot unfolds at a delirious pace, augmented by dizzying zooms, aggressive camera angles, and a nerve-wracking jazz score. Some of the yakuza are refreshingly sinister, but others are ridiculously cliched; Ichikawa can't seem to decide whether he's indulging the genre or lampooning it. In Japanese with subtitles. 90 min.
