Drama, Thriller
In this far-fetched topical thriller, a TV financial-investment analyst (played by George Clooney and transparently based on CNBC's Jim Cramer) gets taken hostage midbroadcast by an all-American loser (Jack O’Connell of Unbroken) who's taken a bath on a bad stock tip. Meanwhile the show's director (Julia Roberts) tries to get the goods on the crooked CEO (Dominic West) who ruined this unhinged everyman. With all the ranting about a "rigged" financial system, the movie certainly captures the zeitgeist, but it' so overloaded with action-movie tropes and tech-based plot contrivances that it begins to feel a little silly. Producers Clooney and Grant Heslov had their finest hour with Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), another tale of politics and broadcasting, yet that movie was quiet and sober, in keeping with its hero, Edward R. Murrow; Money Monster is almost as antic as Cramer himself. Jodie Foster directed; with Caitriona Balfe and Giancarlo Esposito.
