A photographer tries to outrun police and hoodlums in this 1997 crime drama from Croatia. Independent director Goran Rusinovic must be an avid student of film noir and its spiritual descendants; the black-and-white cinematography, mixing cool formalism with distorted camera angles, calls to mind not only Jim Jarmusch's early films but The Trial, Taxi Driver, and Le samourai. Unfortunately the story is an incoherent tangle of beatings, extortion, and kidnapping, as if Rusinovic had mastered the genre's vocabulary but not its diction. 80 min.
