Little can be proved about the life of France's most famous comedic playwright, but director Laurent Tirard makes use of biographical uncertainty to construct a clever tale of what might have happened during Moliere's disappearance at age 22. After his acting troupe's debts land him in jail, Moliere (Romain Duris of The Beat That My Heart Skipped) finds unusual work advising a wealthy businessman who needs to know about the stage arts to woo a sophisticated marquise. To guard this secret from the businessman's wife, Moliere must disguise himself as a priest, and the web of deceit soon entangles the entire household. Through homage to Moliere's works and by the film's own example, Tirard reminds us that comedy can provoke both laughter and thought. In French with subtitles. PG-13, 120 min.
