This was a strange dining experience. Only six tables full on a Saturday night and yet relatively inattentive service. Got the feeling that the waiter maybe didn't really work there, but was filling in as a favor or something.

The food is nothing special. The menu descriptions were tastier than the food itself. I was lead to wonder if the cook actually ever tastes what he puts out. Pork tenderloin with grilled apples sounded much better that the finished product. Kind of flavorless. It reminded me of the cooking of people who really don't like to eat.

Small things, too, like no bread, and no alternative beverages (we did not byob because we don't drink, but something could have been offered) made for a strange feeling.

Another thing was that if there ever was a "Southern" emphasis on the food, there was absolutely no evidence of it the night I was there.

I would not recommend it and do not plan to return as there was nothing really pleasant about the experience.

Re: “Mindy's Hot Chocolate

Two of us arrived at 11:30 pm (posted closing time midnight), and the hostess did her best to turn us away. I explained that we only wanted a cup of hot chocolate and would gladly sit at the bar or lounge area. The hostess suggested we take our hot chocolate to go. Finally, after I pressed the issue, she agreed to seat us "if it's that important to you." The service was otherwise satisfactory. However, we found out that most of the servers had worked a double and that the kitchen was running out of food. Also, to add insult to injury, a couple of large parties were seated after us, perhaps friends of the squat, blonde, unpleasant hostess. It appears that Chef Mindy had better get her act together in the front of the house, or this fun place may not last. By the way, although it is a great place to go for dessert, dinner is just OK.

Re: “Tweet Let's Eat

This is a BYOB restaurant (though possibly not for long) with good food prepared by some seasoned chefs having fun with what they do. It is somewhat difficult to get a reservation for the small dining room, but worth the doing so for the experience. Tweet is next door to a bar (big chicks) so a before and after dinner drink is easily accomodated. Appetizers and desserts are standouts. Main courses did not hold my interest as well, but were good (not great). I had the Porchetta, which was a little too heavy from the too buttery crouton accompanying the dish. Over all, you can't get food of this caliber at this price anywhere else that I know of. I hope they are able to keep this up.

Re: “Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse

We stopped on a whim at Gibson's just to have dessert and coffee in the bar at about 9pm on a Sunday. We had the Macadamia Ice Cream Pie Thing (not sure of its real name, but the waitress knew just what I was talking about). This dessert is about $12, but would serve 4 pigs easily. I recommend stopping in, having coffee or a drink and dessert and listening to some good piano bar music. It's the best value in chicago.

Re: “Wildfire

We arrived without reservations but had no trouble getting a table of our choice -- one of the booths situated a little above the main dining area. Despite the size of the room, it is divided up and laid out in such a way as to maintain a clubby intimacy.

The martinis are pretty good (still not the best). I had the "roumanian" skirt steak because it reminded me of the old time steak houses my dad always talks about. I know that the waitress would not have recommended this to me, she was more inclined to recommend the more standard cuts of beef. However, I am a fan of skirt steak and it was very good. Also, the scallops wrapped in bacon are a tasty appetizer.
