Mingus Awareness Project 3, Justin Dillard Recommended The List (Music) Soundboard

When: Thu., May 7, 9 p.m. 2009
Price: $12, $10 students at the door
For virtuoso jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus—who liked to conduct his bands with extravagant gestures, a raised voice, and the occasional emphatically balled fist—it’s hard to imagine a crueler fate than progressive and total paralysis. But that’s what amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, aka Lou Gehrig’s disease, did to him before it took his life. For three years running now, the Mingus Awareness Project—a collective of local musicians that includes trumpeter Dan Godston, saxophonists Paul Hartsaw and Nick Moran, and bassist Alex Wing—have been fighting back on Mingus’s behalf by convening a large band (eight strong at press time) to play a benefit for the Les Turner ALS Foundation. They’ll cover tunes by Mingus as well as by his associates Eric Dolphy and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and Mingus’s widow, Sue, may do a reading by phone from her memoir of their relationship, Tonight at Noon: A Love Story. Justin Dillard opens with a solo piano set. —Bill Meyer
