Laura Marks's play is the second I've seen in so many weeks to take on mothering. If that's a trend, I'm all for it, as much as I'm eager for writers to escape the suffocation of saccharine mommy narratives. And yet. Like Rachel Axler's misguided attempts at grotesquerie in Smudge, Mine is undermined by a confusion of tone and focus. What begins as a realistic portrayal of bourgeois new-parenting dilemmas shifts midway into a portrait of a woman on edge—to a world either in her mind or in a dystopic future, a la The Handmaid's Tale. The sci-fi element comes late and feels forced. We're told that the postpartum "hormone plunge" can lead to severe depression, but I still didn't expect the darkness of the final scenes. Director Marti Lyons offers a solid production, but there was enough lacking in Marks's script for me to wonder if this painful journey was worth it. —Suzanne Scanlon
