Mindless Behavior, OMG Girlz, Young Marqus

When: Sat., Aug. 3, 7 p.m. 2013
Boy bands have traditionally acted as a bridge between their largely young, white, female audiences and the world of grown-up R&B—they filter out adult subject matter and keep the music’s bumpitude at family-friendly levels, but still give fans something to scream their heads off over. Mindless Behavior is one of the few all-black boy bands to find a measure of crossover pop success, as well as one of the few boy bands of any color to have cultivated an adult following not afraid to cop to liking them. Their latest album, All Around the World (Interscope), knocks in a way that’s a little more grown-up than PG-13, with beats that stick closer to straight hip-hop and the occasional song title that it’s hard to imagine One Direction pulling off (“Keep Her on the Low”). But on “Band-Aid,” among a handful of other cuts, Mindless Behavior still offers well-scrubbed, puppy-dog-eyed tween pop. —Miles Raymer The OMG Girlz and Young Marqus open.
