Mindflayer

Over barfing oscillators and old-school electronic squeals, this Providence duo blasts out panicky beats that pound into your pelvis with nary a flourish. Yeah, they sound a lot like Lightning Bolt--drummer Brian Chippendale is in both groups and he's up to his usual tricks here, alternating between meathead grooves and outbursts that sound like he's kicking his kit down the stairs while screaming like a nasal Harpy into a modified mouth mike. What's different is Meerk Puffy, of the now defunct Forcefield, who uses electronics to channel the Thor's-hammer chaos into either a psychedelic electric storm or a druidic chorus. Their latest CD, Take Your Skin Off (Bulb), is hyperactive in a hardcore way--all worked up and maybe not sure why. Also on the bill are berserkers Nautical Almanac, who modify their faces with Scotch tape and recircuit children's toys and electronics to flip out on command. Two years ago they left Chicago for Baltimore; this is their first local performance since. Wednesday, April 23, 10 PM, Fireside Bowl, 2646 W. Fullerton; 773-486-2700.
