The hero of this earnest hagiography is an 11th-century Tibetan whose family is cheated of its inheritance. After he grows up, his bitter mother sends him to learn black magic, and though he destroys his hometown by summoning a lightning storm, he regrets his actions when he sees the suffering he's caused. Seeking refuge from an angry mob, he enters a small Buddhist temple and begins the path to enlightenment (a journey to be covered in the sequel, due in 2009). Director and cowriter Neten Chokling is a Buddhist lama who knows his scenic Himalayan locations. But he's also a plodding storyteller who lacks the lightness of Khyentse Norbu, the lama who made The Cup and Travellers and Magicians. In Tibetan with subtitles. 94 min.
