Re: “Chez Simo Bistro

I love one-French-guy places like this. Anyone remember La Loup or Loup Cafe, something like that, down by Wrigley Field? Chez Simo reminds me of that. Nice homey atmosphere, Edith Piaf in the air, Paris prints on the walls, and one French guy, Simo, quietly taking your order and waiting your table with owner solicitude. The room is a breakfast place with booths but nicely transformed. Food is excellent and very reasonably priced, bistro warhorses like coq au vin, steak frites, tarte tatin, creme brulee, all expertly prepared. BYO, so it's a cheap night all around. Keep Simo in business!

Steve! Too bad for the Reader, good for you! Does this mean you can goof off like, more than twice a year?

Re: “The Smashing Pumpkins and Liz Phair hit the road together, 22 years after an infamous takedown in the Reader

Nice piece, fun memories, and I think you're right, Bill never seemed to get or acknowledge the difference between "alternative" and "not yet famous." Or maybe he was trying to assert that there was no difference, that alternative was a status that every alternative artist wanted to escape. Or maybe it was me who thought that. Anyway I think you're right that "free weeklies ought to serve the same needs for music lovers that undersupervised college radio stations still can." To me the interesting and puzzling question was always what happens next? What happens to the uncommercial act that gets discovered and sells a million records? Do they instantly become bad or not alternative? I remember a lot of hand-wringing over bands got over, as though they weren't "ours" anymore, and I never could understand it.

Agree with CMBurns. Good show, Ms Stuart, you wield the language well.

Re: “Is Brobagel the New York bagel place the city has been waiting for?

Treasure Island stores used to carry the goods from New York Bagels in Lincolnwood. Maybe they still do. (I reluctantly quit bagels a few years ago and haven't been paying attention.)

Re: “They Came in Through the Bathroom Mirror

Original headline was "They Came in through the Bathroom MIRROR." Makes a little more sense that way, no?

Re: “Are you hungry for specifics in this week's huge Alinea story?

You all have missed the point. Look how far our "news" media rode this story without doing any reporting! Good piece, Mike.
