Folks with a passing interest in the rich Bay Area rock scene probably know garage-pop wizard Mikal Cronin only as a backing musician—he’s played in Moonhearts and Okie Dokie, for instance, and with his Epsilons bandmate Ty Segall he’s pushed garage into all sorts of strange, noisy, and usually endearing directions. Cronin is an integral part of the Ty Segall Band’s 2012 debut, Slaughterhouse, and late last year he signed with indie powerhouse Merge, which ought to bring his engrossing deconstructionist style to a bigger audience. This is probably why In the Red just reissued his 2009 album with Ty Segall, Reverse Shark Attack—though its sound quality is sometimes so muddy that even aughties garage fanatics might admit defeat, it’s a good Cronin primer, demonstrating just how quickly he’s evolving. On his excellent 2011 self-titled debut (Trouble in Mind), he uses gritty riffs as a base for hypnotic shoegaze (“Green and Blue”) and bouncy, irresistible pop (“Apathy”). This weekend Cronin backs Segall for two sold-out Empty Bottle shows on Saturday and performs his solo material at a brunchtime Trouble in Mind event at Saki on Sunday. —Leor Galil
