These days Brooklyn garage bands seem required to have a token weirdo who just plays floor tom or hits an E-flat on a synth, and many of the Strange Boys’ labelmates on In the Red are going future primitive—the Nuggets-style garage on this Austin outfit’s full-length debut, The Strange Boys and Girls Club, is starting to make them look like perverse holdouts. They ditched some tracks they’d cut with Jay Reatard and instead recorded the album with a friend in an abandoned Texas liquor store; the influence of fellow Texans like Roky Erickson, Doug Sahm, and even Mouse & the Traps is all over it. Ryan Sambol’s Sky Saxon-on-whippits vocals add a whiff of playful derangement to trashy, poppy, devolved-yet-accessible songs that gloriously bastardize everything that’s ever worked in garage rock—not that it needed proving again, but this kind of originality comes from what musicians bring to their instruments, not what instruments they bring. Mika Miko headlines; the Strange Boys, Boystown, and Ty Segall open. —Brian Costello
