Chicago’s bustling hip-hop scene has produced some great moments this year, but few have been as poignant and powerful as August’s The Water[s], the second self-released mixtape from south-side rapper Mick Jenkins (he signed with Cinematic Music Group just prior to its release). The 22-year-old takes resplendent soul-influenced instrumentals and binds them to revealing observations of black kids catching stray bullets—with his personable, relaxed flow providing the vehicle for complex rhymes about street violence and racism. The Water[s] is well executed right down to the flexible, overarching concept of water acting as both a life force and a source of knowledge. Jenkins assembled the tracks so that they flow together just right. “Dehydration” and “Healer” invite listeners not only to unwind and breathe in the ambience, but also to settle in for the rest of the tracks—because the mixtape is a filling six-course meal. If The Water[s] is missing anything it’s a banger, but that’s not to say Jenkins can’t deliver one—his tremendous guest verse on Hurt Everybody’s “Treat Me (Caucasian)” made the political-cum-pop track radiate. —Leor Galil
