Touch and Go calls this recent signing from San Francisco “drum punk,” which is as good a genre tag as you’re gonna find for these guys—few other bands you’d categorize as rock play with such a fixation on rhythm. There are guitars and bass on their forthcoming Watersports (due February 17), but they tend to be played in repetitive little loops or indistinct sound washes, leaving the drums and Daniel Martin-McCormick’s shrieking fits the center of attention. What melodic hooks there are are distributed sparingly over the long compositions, which can be off-putting—as can a singer who sounds like a little girl throwing a temper tantrum—but at its better moments Watersports sounds like Liquid Liquid being covered by the Ex. Onyou opens. —Miles Raymer
