An amusing take on white southern culture and fundamentalist Christian fervor, John Culbertson's 2008 comedy follows the hijinks after Dwayne and Lou Ann Hightower--residents of the nicest trailer park in Elroy, South Carolina--find what appears to be an image of Jesus on the refrigerator on their front porch. Predictably, everyone tries to cash in--Dwayne, the tabloid press, the town's Baptist preacher, even the owner of the local video store. Though the play stumbles when Culbertson indulges in heavy-handed moralizing against religious hypocrisy, it generally succeeds as an affectionate study of how the incident affects the Hightowers' troubled marriage. Hubris Productions' Chicago premiere, directed by Dennis Frymire, features honest, engaging performances, and designers John Whittington (set) and Henri Dugas (lights) provide a credible environment. --Albert Williams
