The familiar argument that Los Angeles is world headquarters for dreamers, swindlers, and creeps is delivered with a Spanish inflection in this one-man show by Guillermo Reyes. In nine biting and funny monologues, we meet a series of gay Latino Angelenos, including an indomitable undocumented immigrant, a kept boy aging out of the preferred demographic, a caustic ESL instructor, and a flamenco dancer dying of AIDS. Under Sandra Marquez’s fluid direction for Pride Films and Plays, these flawed, vivid characters are embodied by Nelson Rodriguez, a versatile and vocally deft performer who supplies the right mix of empathy and mischief. First performed in 1994, the play illustrates in its topical references how much has improved for gays and how little race relations have changed. —Zac Thompson
