I remember reading the first installment of Losing the War, back when The Reader was published as a broadsheet. I found myself intensely riveted by a topic I'd never had much interest in: WWII. Such was Lee Sandlin's writing. I couldn't wait for the following week's edition, just to read the next installment. I loved the essay and still have the yellowing newsprint saved in my collection. This was before the days when the Internet was the world's archive -- back then there was no guarantee you'd ever find another copy of a great article. Anyway, that was my exposure to Lee Sandlin, a great writer who will be missed. RIP.
