Dear Editors:

Peter Margasak has it exactly right [Rock Etc., October 7]. Veruca Salt violates the most basic alternative ethos: if anything, music should be bought, not sold.

Veruca Salt's "musical sensibilities" are those of a teenage band who discover by accident that everybody playing the same note really loud sounds cool. These bands typically write songs as bad as those on American Thighs, but are listened to years later in nostalgic embarrassment when they get drunk on cheap wine with friends sworn to secrecy.

Add Veruca to the list of media sluts. On the other hand, it's sort of fun watching the press stooges (Wyman included) backpedal with the lame defense: "It's only their first album!" Hey, you guys hyped it up and sold it so even Wicker Park cynics can't resist.

The imminent fall of the Chicago Scene predicted. Thanks, brats, for ruining it for everyone.
