Jeremy Menekseoglu’s version of Euripides’s tale is remarkable mostly for its unflinching focus on the sons slaughtered by vengeful Medea to get back at her war hero ex, Jason. Menekseoglu’s histrionic staging for Dream Theatre makes it abundantly clear that neither Rachel Martindale’s Medea nor Menekseoglu’s Great Santini-esque Jason gives a damn about their kids. Martindale’s frustrating tendency to whisper means we lose a lot of her speeches, and the Vivian Girls-gone-feral chorus is also mostly unintelligible. But the nihilism and narcissism of the grown-ups comes through with chilling intensity. (KR)
