McNamara's | Irving Park | Bar/Lounge, English/Irish/Scottish | Restaurant
Irish bar and grill with a casual, neighborhood feel.

Our Review

This is a welcoming Irish pub right down to the brogue-tongued bartender slow pouring pints of Guinness and the "mayor" opining from his bar stool on everything from politics to the proper way to make a Bloody Mary (with a healthy dose of horseradish, thank you very much). The restaurant, two comfortable rooms with exposed brick and large windows looking onto Irving Park Road, has a menu more elaborate than you might expect: in addition to the pub grub and dishes that nod to Ireland there are upscale crusted/stuffed/sauced preparations. Crab cakes, though of the more-filler-than-crab school, were fine, but the bacony twice-cooked potato was quite good, as was a thick, rich potato-leek soup. Wood-grilled beef fillet was tasty (the burgers are also wood grilled); a BLT with thick-cut bacon was also a standout. House-made apple pie was forgettable, but no matter--Irish coffee with whipped cream seemed the most popular dessert anyway. Other Irish specialties include shepherd's pie, corned beef and cabbage, and a traditional Irish breakfast served every Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM.
